January Features

Ice Climbing on Rattlesnake Mountain - Rumney

Most people wouldn't think of putting on warm winter gear and crampons and then climbing an ice-fall hundreds of feet tall using two picks and their stamina, and that's just what draws hundred of new and old ice climbers to the cliffs of Rattlesnake Mountain in Rumney, NH every winter. [More]

Sledding in the Gully

Not all winter activities have to cost a fortune. A few dollars for a sled at a local store can yield a lot of enjoyment for kids and adults alike. This month we profile "The Gully" in Rumney, NH a safe and thrilling sliding spot. Send us your favorite sledding spot and we'll check it out for the 10,000 readers of Heart of NH here.

Located just behind the main village of Rumney, the Gully is well hidden and sits on private land that traditionally has been open for sledders. The sled run itself is about 200 yards long and follows the path of an old logging road that runs between two high ridges that form the arms of a notch that is the sled run. Since the sides are quite steep with the path itself clear with a few turns it forms a sort of natural "luge" run. Sledders can get going quite fast and safely navigate their way down the run. Free Joseph
Reggae For Everyman (and Woman)
By Wayne D. King

On an afternoon when the streets of Concord are covered with a foot of new snow, the last thing one would expect to be doing is meeting with a Reggae musician. But that’s just what I’m doing here on Washington Street. I’m here to meet with Reggae musician Fitzroy “Free” Joseph - star native of the Carribean island of Dominique and half time resident of Concord.

“Free”  as everyone knows him, divides his time between his island home and the home of his partner and love Wini Dean a long time resident of New Hampshire and a long time favorite in the Concord area community since the days when she ran one of Concord’s most chic boutiques, Isis, on Main Street. The Awesome Heaven of Skiing
Ray De La Cuesta

It's been nagging at you to get more exercise and you are going to do it now. You're resolved to do it. No more starting and then quitting. But what are you going to do for exercise? It's always such a chore to pick the right workout program and one that will apply to all seasons. You also want a program that gives you an excellent workout but seems like fun and does not overly tire you.

Guerilla Marketing on the Internet
Guerilla Marketing on The Internet
An Overview
By Wayne D. King

The Term “Guerilla Marketing” has become an oft-mentioned one in recent years. For the most part, it describes a state of mind in which one uses sometimes unorthodox, and always carfully-targeted, cost-effective methodologies for marketing a business.

One of the most effective mediums for this kind of marketing is the Internet. This has been true since the Internet’s inception. However, with the development of many new technologies now linked to the Internet, it is particularly true. [Continued]

Creating A Newsletter or eZine for Your Nonprofit Organization
By W. Douglas Roy
The first step toward creating a newsletter is to understand why you are making the effort to create it in the first place. Let's face it, people who work for nonprofit organizations have a tough enough time just keeping up with the other tasks necessary to meet the mission of their organizations. Adding additional tasks like a newsletter might seem, at first, to be little more than an unwanted distraction from the tasks at hand.

Choosing a Carpet That is You
Myra Tepp

You are finally about to move into that home you always dreamed of. There is a lot left today as moving day approaches. You keep rearranging furniture in your head such as where the bedroom dressers will go and where the framed paintings will go. It is a typical moving experience.

Part of being your dream home is getting to decide what carpet you will have. You know longer have to live somewhere like an apartment where you get whatever carpet is already in it. However there are so many different kinds of carpet to buy. How do we make an informed decision about which type of carpet to purchase? [More]

Refinance or Not? That is the Question.
By Hilda Schultze

What does it mean to refinance? Why would someone
want to refinance? There are many cases when a person
would refinance. When we use the term refinance, we are
typically referring to a loan such as a car or house loan.
It may also be a business loan. For the purpose of this
article, we are going to discuss the home loan but most
of the same rules of refinancing apply to other types of
loans as well. [More]

What Every Writer Needs to Know About Copyrights and
Trademarks (U.S.)
By Marilyn J. Schwader

When most people consider writing a book, they don't think
about Trademarks. However, I highly recommend that you
leverage your writing for multiple purposes, and that's why
registering a Trademark for your concept is a good idea. If
you use your writing as the basis for workshops and other
products, it's in your best interests to protect your
concepts with a Trademark. [More]
